The Structure Tool

The Structure Tool is used to divide a big piece of information into smaller bits and pieces to make both understanding and recalling the information easier.

Do you like cakes? Sure you do; everyone likes cake! So, imagine you want to bake a cake for dinner. Unfortunately, you are short on time today, so when you get to the store, you pick up a ready-to-bake packaged mix. You read the label on the box, find the list of ingredients you need and go home to bake. Step-by-step instructions detail how to end up with a delicious cake.

In the past, baking seemed so complicated; you hadn’t even known where to start. Seeing your friends eat this cake and hearing their compliments—they simply can’t believe you baked it—you’re grateful for having tried again. It was all so easy!

What made it so easy to make such a delicious cake this time? Making the cake was easy because the whole process was structured. You only had to follow the steps in a prescribed pattern. The big process, baking the cake, was divided into small, segmented steps. On the way to completing one major task, you only had to deal with a limited amount of information in a given moment. This is what the Structure Tool is about: taking a big concept or task or piece of information and figuring out the parts it is made of, looking for the relationship between those parts and determining how the parts fit together. In this chapter, we will look primarily at how information, ideas and concepts are structured and how you can structure information yourself.
